Substance Use/Addiction

People use substances for a variety of reasons, including to relax, cope with anxiety or depression, increase social comfort, escape painful thoughts or feelings, induce sleep, reduce boredom, or manage trauma-related symptoms. Often, the substance will provide temporary relief of some kind, reinforcing the behavior and, in some cases, increasing psychological and/or physical reliance over time.

In recent years, the term “substance use disorder”(SUD) has largely replaced previously used terms such as “alcoholism” or “substance abuse/dependence” to describe problematic substance use that is significantly interfering with important life areas, such as one’s relationships, employment, mental or physical health, and finances, among others. While some people who have an SUD are also physically dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, this is not a prerequisite, and people struggling with substances can have a range of symptoms and concerns related to their use without being dependent.

I work with individuals who are at various stages of readiness with regard to changing their substance use habits. Whether you are just beginning to question your relationship to substances and are ambivalent about making a change, have been actively looking to change your substance use behaviors for a while and are motivated to take the first step, or have been in treatment before and need help getting back on track, I will work with you to develop a plan that is specific to where you are in the change process and consistent with your goals.

I am committed to meeting you “where you are at” and believe strongly that there are many paths to developing a healthier relationship with substances. While abstinence may be your goal or seem indicated based on your personal experiences, I also work with clients looking to moderate their substance use and reduce its negative impact, while not giving the substance up entirely.

I have extensive training in evidence-based treatments for addressing substance issues, including motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and CBT approaches. Together, we will work to understand the role that substances play in your life and, with proven strategies, find alternative ways to meet your needs and goals and achieve your desired change.
